Product Description
5/16" A2 Stainless Steel Split Cotter Pins – DIN 94
Heavy-duty 5/16" split cotter pins manufactured from A2 stainless steel and designed for securing castellated nuts, clevis pins, pivot pins and other retained components. Once inserted through a suitable cross-drilled hole, the two legs are bent apart to prevent the pin from working loose.
The 5/16" nominal diameter closely corresponds to the listed 8mm metric size. Available lengths range from 1 1/4" to 4", with pack quantities from 1 to 1,000 pins.

Length is measured along the straight section of the pin from beneath the eye to the end of the shorter leg. Imperial descriptions and listed metric lengths are nominal catalogue sizes.
How Split Pins Work
The closed legs of the split pin are inserted through a cross-drilled hole in a bolt, shaft, clevis pin or similar component. The protruding legs are then bent in opposite directions, creating a simple mechanical lock that prevents the pin from passing back through the hole.
Split pins are commonly used with castellated or slotted nuts, where the pin passes through the nut slots and a drilled bolt or shaft to help prevent unwanted rotation.
Typical Applications
- Large castellated and slotted nuts
- Clevis and pivot pin retention
- Agricultural and construction equipment
- Trailers and heavy vehicle assemblies
- Machinery linkages and control mechanisms
- Marine and outdoor equipment
- General engineering and maintenance
Installation Advice
Select a split pin that passes freely through the drilled hole without being forced. After insertion, bend the two legs apart sufficiently to prevent withdrawal, taking care not to damage the surrounding component.
Split cotter pins are normally treated as single-use retaining components. Replace the pin after removal rather than straightening and reusing it, particularly in safety-related or highly loaded assemblies.
